Cindi Fowler / Shane Ranschaert

14th MCD – This is one to curiously watch. First-term Democrat Cindi Fowler was a legislative aide to former councilman Bob Henderson before being elected in her own right to this far southwestern Jefferson County district four years ago. This year she faces one of her former part-time aides, Republican Shane Ranschaert, a 22 year old who won his primary by four votes. The district is conservative but leans Democratic and is otherwise represented by Democrats in both the State House and Senate, excepting a few precincts in Republican Danny Seum’s district. Both candidates have worked the district and were campaigning at the recent Southwest Festival, the largest annual event in the area. Fowler, who is a graduate of Valley High School, is reporting $10,715.00. Ranschaert, who is counting on a boost from Trump supporters in the area but who has not committed to the GOP nominee, lags in fundraising reporting only $2,559.00. Ranschaert is a Western High School graduate and also attended Boyce College.

Scott Reed / Gill Holland

16th MCD – The other contested race in the Metro Council is at the opposite end of the county in the northeastern area including Prospect, Northfield, Glenview, and Green Spring. Long-term GOP incumbent Kelly Downard is retiring. The Republicans nominated Scott Reed, an executive in his family’s business, V. G. Reed and Sons, and a graduate of the University of Louisville. Reed, a former officer in the Louisville Tea Party, had originally said he would file for state representative, a seat he also sought in 2012, but decided instead on the council race. He faces Democratic businessman, attorney, and developer Gill Holland. Holland is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law. Holland is probably best known for his redevelopment of the East Market Street corridor which he renamed NuLu. Reed’s campaign is reporting $6,257.00. Holland is reporting $15,305.00. The district is strongly Republican but has supported John Yarmuth and Greg Fischer in past elections. Another one to watch.

Money carries the day for Holland.
